Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of therapy that focuses on helping you accept your thoughts and feelings rather than trying to control or eliminate them. It emphasizes living a meaningful life by clarifying personal values and taking committed action towards those values.
ACT can be of benefit because it teaches mindfulness skills – being present in the moment; accepting difficult emotions; and taking actions aligned with values. For example, if you suffer from chronic pain, it can help you learn to accept the pain while pursuing activities that bring fulfillment and joy.
In a standard ACT session, we collaborate with you to identify your personal values and set meaningful goals. We will often employ mindfulness exercises and experiential techniques to help you become more aware of your thoughts and emotions without any bias or judgment. We can, as needed, work on developing psychological flexibility, which allows you to adapt to life’s challenges while staying true to your values. As with all our sessions, we provide support, encouragement, and guidance to help you live a more fulfilling and purposeful life.
