Registered Clinical Counsellor #20095
Amrita identifies as a heterosexual, cis-gender, first generation South Asian woman born in Canada. She holds a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology and specializes in EMDR and Internal Family Systems.
Amrita provides counselling services that support youth and adults of diverse backgrounds with attachment issues, family dynamics, low self-esteem, anxiety and trauma offering EMDR and internal family systems. Her speciality is working with those who have complicated family dynamics and feel unseen/unheard by people in their past or present life.
She uses EMDR, internal family systems and somatic work that specializes in deepening people’s understanding of themselves, leading them to rediscover or redefine their authentic selves. Her goal is to create a space where clients feel safe and can share their life experiences, a place where they feel seen and heard. She works at a pace that is comfortable for each client to help guide and determine favourable outcomes.
Amrita believes in working collaboratively with each of her clients, building off their unique and individual strengths. Authentic and dedicated, she focuses on creating an inclusive space that welcomes all people. In particular, she is passionate about helping older youth and adults who struggle with anxiety, low self-esteem, shame or self-acceptance (believing they are “not good enough” or that there is “something wrong” with them).
For those suffering from trauma or other related issues, Amrita knows the past cannot be erased or forgotten. But with collaborative effort, guidance and support, she also knows it’s possible to help them transition through that and move towards a more meaningful adulthood. This involves making sense of the past, grieving and healing, all of which empower them to become more authentic versions of themselves while reconnecting with their own inner strength and capabilities.
Amrita’s approach may involve looking at an individual’s past and present and exploring the system/culture in which they live – often adapting things to meet unique needs and challenges. The modalities she often leans on include EMDR, acceptance and commitment therapy, internal family systems, inner child work, attachment theory, mindfulness/somatic theory, trauma-informed, and a culturally sensitive/anti-oppressive lens.
Outside of work, Amrita enjoys connecting with her community, exploring the world and spending time with her dog, Grizz.
