Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) is an approach that focuses on understanding and addressing emotions within the family system. It emphasizes creating a safe and supportive environment for expressing emotions, resolving conflicts, and strengthening family bonds.

EFFT can benefit families by helping them improve communication, manage conflicts constructively, and build emotional connections. For example, it can assist a family dealing with a member’s addiction by addressing underlying emotional issues, reducing blame and criticism, and fostering empathy and understanding.

What might you expect with an EFFT session at Tulua? We typically work with the entire family to explore emotions, identify patterns of interaction, and address specific challenges or concerns. We’ll help family members express their feelings, thoughts, and needs openly and honestly, fostering empathy and validation among others. Emotion coaching, role-playing, and guided conversations are some of the techniques we may use to facilitate emotional expression, understanding, and resolution. Structure, support, and guidance are key to helping a family work together towards positive change and improved relational dynamics.

“Healthy striving is self-focused:
“How can I improve?”
Perfectionism is other-focused:
“What will they think?”
