Does my insurance cover Counselling/ MSP?

Learn More

In Canada, MSP does not cover Registered Clinical Counsellors. If you have extended benefits, we suggest connecting with your benefits/insurance provider to see if you have coverage for Registered Clinical Counsellors under BCACC.

What about direct billing?

Learn More

At this time, we are unable to provide direct billing. Payment will need to be made after each session. We can provide a receipt after each session, which you can use to receive reimbursement from your insurance provider if you have coverage.

What are your rates/fees?

Learn More

Please refer to the services page for information on rates and fees. Please contact us for further information on the sliding scale option.

How many sessions will I need?

Learn More

The length of therapy is different for everyone. The therapeutic relationship can last anywhere from a short time to years. Most clients prefer to have weekly sessions. Overall, we encourage anywhere between 12-16 sessions, however, we can further discuss this as your therapy progresses.

What’s the first session like?

Learn More

The first session can be nerve-racking, so feel proud of the courage you took to begin your healing! The first session is where we begin forming our therapeutic relationship. We will begin by completing consent forms, going over confidentiality, and getting to know one another. The rest of the session will focus on exploring what brought you to therapy and what you hope to achieve in therapy.

Hard to pick a counsellor, why should I choose you?

Learn More

Beginning therapy or even the thought of starting therapy can be uncomfortable and overwhelming. We find it helpful to consider therapy as a journey you embark on. The journey may not always go smoothly, but in the end, you may feel more empowered than when you first began.

Choosing a counsellor that is a good fit for you is so important for your healing journey! Each counsellor/therapist has their own style, approach, techniques and availability. Therefore we provide a free 15-minute consultation with each client before beginning our time together. The 15-minute consultation is for us to decide if we’re the right fit for eachother.

Are you open to providing services to clients who belong to specific minorities?

Learn More

Absolutely! We understand how it can be a challenge, at times, to find support where you feel comfortable and understood. At Tulua Therapy we have specific experience with people with Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD), and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder(FASD). We like to let all clients know that we are on our own learning journey and, at times, might make mistakes as well.

Defintions

Therapist

A therapist is an umbrella term that refers to a variety of healing professionals.

Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist is a physician who is trained in mental health. Psychiatrists can assess, diagnose, and prescribe medication.

Psychologist

A psychologist has earned a doctoral degree, however, is unable to prescribe medication. A psychologist can make assessments and help treat mental health diagnoses.

Counsellor/ Psychotherapist

In B.C, the term “counsellor” is unregulated. Therefore anyone can refer to themselves as a therapist, counsellor or psychotherapist. Regulating bodies such as BCACC ( British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors) is one way to know if the therapist you choose holds a Master’s degree and has completed a specific number of clinical hours. In BC, those who are registered with BCACC are able to hold the designation of Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). A clinical counsellor has in-depth knowledge of assessing, diagnosing and providing treatments. Counsellors cannot prescribe medication.
